It is hard to believe that summer is over. Now is a great time to visit your local zoo. The crowds have mostly gone and kids are back in school. Next month the Central Park Zoo will be holding the first of three photo opportunities for animal and camera lovers. First up is – Zoo Views: Animals in Autumn – Saturday, October 22 from 8:30 to 10:30. Click here and sign up. It will be fun. Hope to see you there.

While most caregivers in the animal kingdom are mothers, there are some father’s who join in the role as caregiver. I salute all of those father’s out there in today’s photo montage. Not uncoincidentally – it is also National Martini Day.

I love all cats – small, medium and large. This week’s montage is devoted to these gorgeous creatures. Did you know there are 37 species of cat? Down near the bottom of today’s montage you will see my three cats (yes, three) – Madison, the elder cat and sisters Audrey and Roberta who are now two. Want to see them as kittens? Meow.

It is always a treat to introduce friends to the fun at the always terrific Staten Island Zoo. Along with their varied zoo collection, we got to meet up-close and personal, a young beaver doing his first solo swim, Gregory their fennec fox, a tractable African porcupine, the now grown arctic foxes, Ce Ce the charming sloth and the amazing cassowary. Thanks again to Veterinarian and General Curator, Dr. Marc Valitutto for his time and energy. We loved our visit (and will be back).

Happy Mother’s Day to all of the mothers, caregivers, nurturers, pamperers, surrogates and loving coddlers out there. Most of today’s photos were taken on last week’s all Texas Zoocation. We had a blast and I will be posting photos of those great Texas zoos in the coming weeks.
My mother, Lillian Wolfe, is long gone, but her advice, warnings and general ‘Lili-isms’ live on in our daily lives. She taught us to laugh at life, to think, to question authority, to march, to protest and generally act upon what we thought was wrong. She also gave us our moral compass – one glance from Lillian told us instantly whether our behavior was acceptable or not – and I got a lot of glances. My sister Terry and I remember many childhood events differently but we both agree that our mother was a pistol. Here’s to Lillian Wolfe – she formed and informed what we are today.
