I love cats – both big and small. This week’s montage is dedicated to these gorgeous creatures. See if you can identify 14 out of the 37 cat species in the world.

This Tuesday (8.8.17) will be the 29th anniversary of the Central Park Zoo (in its present form). I am happy to say I have been involved with the zoo for the past 28 of those 29 years. The zoo began in the 1860s as a menagerie. The 1905 postcard above depicts the menagerie with the Arsenal (built in 1848 – which now houses our WCS administrative offices and the NYC Parks Dept). The zoo was modified in 1934 as part of the WPA with the addition of many new buildings arranged in a quadrangle around the sea lion pool. In a contract with NYC, the zoo was completely renovated in the mid-1980s and with much fanfare, reopened on August 8th, 1988, replacing the old-fashioned cages with naturalistic environments. There are many great old photos of the menagerie and zoo with a simple google search. Happy Anniversary!

Brooklyn’s Prospect Park Zoo was the zoo of my childhood and whenever I visit I get a few fond flashbacks. On this visit, I remembered there was an elephant named ‘Judy’ – so I googled it. Oh dear – sometimes, the outcome of a google search is not very good news. But, it was a long time ago and zoos were very different back then. My memory of Judy the elephant still remains sweet. Go visit!

The third week in July is National Zookeeper Week. I appreciate these terrific people all year long and dedicate this week’s photo montage to the 18 Zookeepers who make everything hum at my home base, the Central Park Zoo. I thank you, one and all, for all you do – the unsung heroes – each and every day. We are open 365 days a year, thru rain, snow, summer heat and all holidays. National Zookeeper Week just started, how about if you go to a zoo this week tell a zookeeper how much they are appreciated?

It is hard to believe that it is one year since Jack the Dog came to live with us at Casa Lobo. Other than his waking up time (which is 4:41AM) he is a perfect dog. He is sweet, friendly and gets along with other dogs, kids, neighbors and strangers. Two out of my three cats adore him. The elder cat essentially does not like anyone so it would be more surprising if she liked him. He is featured with some of the many friends who came to meet him this year. Enjoy our Jack-iversary.

We visited the Bronx Zoo about a month ago and were delighted to find so many babies. Included in these wonderful baby sightings were adorable bison, porcupine, tawny frogmouth, Inca tern, gaur, four Pere David fawns, baboon, ring-tailed lemur and the always charming young gorillas. It was a terrific visit. Go visit while they are still young and active.

It has been about 10 years since Dale Chihuly’s work was last seen at NYBG. Dale Chihuly is an international art star. He changed the course of glass art with his innovation, creativity and amazing talent. I’ve been following his work since his days of glass blowing at RISD’s Tillinghast Farm where we both went to school in the ’60’s. In 2014 we went to Seattle and saw his beautiful work at the Chihuly Garden and Glass Museum in the shadow of the Space Needle. This new exhibit at NYBG is inspiring and if night lights are something you like, why not go for the evening and see some of his work in a different light?

While most caregivers in the animal kingdom are mothers, there are some father’s who join in the role as caregiver. I salute all of those father’s out there in today’s photo montage. Coincidentally – tomorrow is also National Martini Day. Why not celebrate that special day today?
Cincinnati Zoo – mini-zoocation ends and my camera dies June 11, 2017

Our mini-May Zoocation finale was at the Cincinnati Zoo. It was a rainy, bleak day and after one click, my camera died. We tried triage to no avail. After a small ‘woe is me’ breakdown I took out my iPhone 6s. All of the photos in today’s montage were taken with my smart phone. I like the Cincinnati Zoo (second visit) but the weather caused many of the animals to be indoors. Despite not seeing adorable baby hippo, Fiona, we had a great time. PS – they have the best insect house we have even seen.
