We are off on zoocation for the next couple of weeks celebrating 15 years of zoocationing with a trip to the Pacific Northwest. Looking to reunite with some old friends and to make some new ones along the way. As we leave summer I salute the animal collection at my home base, the Central Park Zoo.BBQ in the NYC Sky September 1, 2019

This week’s invitation to a BBQ on the 62nd floor in the new Hudson Yards area was an offer I surely would not refuse. Generous friends, great conversation, delicious food and amazing views. Thanks Joe, Tony, Donald and Rich.

My last visit to Brooklyn’s New York Aquarium was in mid-March. It was cold and damp. The upside was that it wasn’t crowded at all. This visit was fun even though there were many more visitors enjoying the summer in Coney Island. We sat through their delightful sea lion behavior show which I had not seen in many years. All in all we had a fun visit which of course included a walk down the boardwalk and a visit to famous Nathan’s. Yum!

It has been three years since I ventured out to the Queens Zoo. My goal was to see the eight month old Andean (aka Spectacled) bear cubs Brienne and Benny. The female and male cubs were born in January to mother Nicole and father Bouba. My ultra long wait for the cubs to appear was worth the wait. They are pure joy and adorable. I encourage a visit before they grow up. Might I suggest you also visit the Queens Museum (a stone’s throw away from the zoo) and see their amazing NYC panorama. While I have your attention I wanted to give you a heads up about our Central Park Zoo Fall Photo Experience. It is ‘live’ on the WCS website now. The session which will feature pumpkins and is called Zoo Views: Animals in Autumn: Sun, Oct 27, 2019 8:30AM – 10:30AM. It is my favorite photo class and time of the year. Hope to see you in the fall.

I hadn’t been to the Bronx Zoo in about a year and decided to head a bit north for a visit. This large zoo never disappoints. It is difficult to visit every habitat (but I sure did try). I missed a few key areas but will return soon.

The heat was surely on these last couple of weeks in NYC. It seemed to be a good idea to spend some of my time chilling with the penguins at the Central Park Zoo. Our zoo has four species of penguin – King, Gentoo, Macaroni and Chinstrap. The exhibit is chilly and fun. Come visit and stay cool with our fine feathered friends. Also wanted to give you a heads up about our Central Park Zoo Fall Photo Experience. It is ‘live’ on the WCS website now. The session which will feature pumpkins and is called Zoo Views: Animals in Autumn: Sun, Oct 27, 2019 8:30AM – 10:30AM. It is my favorite photo class and time of the year. It’s that time of year when we recognize and celebrate the dedicated zookeepers who keep our zoos and aquariums humming. Zookeeper faces may change from year to year but the hard work, resourcefulness and commitment remain the same. I salute you all and especially the staff at my home base, the Central Park Zoo. You allow me to take your photos while you perform your tasks with good humor and I appreciate that. We are open 365 days a year, thru rain, snow, summer heat and all holidays. National Zookeeper Week starts today. How about if you go to a zoo this week tell a zookeeper how much they are appreciated?

In my not very zealous quest to find a new senior dog to bring home I found Pete.(Note to my friends who are very sure I need another dog…I have not given up my doggie search but have just gotten side tracked for a bit). Pete is about one to two years old and walked into my friend’s yard and began to hang around. After a few free meals Pete got the idea that inside was much cozier than outside. That same friend gave me my other two wonderful cats, Audrey and Roberta, almost six years ago. So how could I say no to this new offer. Pete moved in three weeks ago today and is fitting in perfectly. If you are on facebook, you can follow the daily adventures of Audrey, Robert and Pete.
