Zoo photography is both challenging and fun. They say the eyes are the window to the soul – I don’t know about that – but I do know if you can capture a gorgeous creature looking back at you – it is a great photo moment. A special connection is made between the subject and the viewer. Today’s montage is devoted to those moments.
Are you getting a new camera, lens or phone for Christmas, Hanukkah (or whatever you celebrate)? Why not try it out at my next Wildlife Photo Workshop at the Central Park Zoo on Sunday, January 25th from 8:30 to 10:30. Perhaps we will get lucky and have snowy photo ops but I can surely guarantee you will see some new residents at the zoo and have fun all before the zoo opens to the public. Click here, scroll to Adult Programs and sign up.
My zoocation buddy and good friend Mary Schwalm is again offering her amazing 2015 desk calendars. The images are from this year’s zoocations. The calendar makes a great gift for office an swap, holiday party, stocking stuffer, and a unique gift to enjoy throughout the year. Just $10 – for details click here.

I love cats – both big and small. This week’s montage is dedicated to these gorgeous creatures. See if you can identify 14 out of the 37 cat species in the world. If you scroll down to the bottom of today’s montage you can see my two cats, Audrey and Roberta, now a year old. Want to see them one year ago? Check them out here. If you are on facebook, you can ‘like’ Audrey and Roberta and join a growing list of fans who get one photo a day of their exploits and antics.

The occasional Friday road trip gang piled into a car this week and visited the Philadelphia Zoo. Their four little lion cubs were the big draw for me and the Philadelphia Zoo never disappoints. Their tree-top trail theme has expanded to include larger primates and now the big cats also have access to this great enrichment. There is nothing quite as thrilling looking up to see a gorgeous tiger overhead, licking his chops. They are in the process of building an overhead trail for the gorillas too. We will be back.

It has been almost four months since I shared photos from my home base, the Central Park Zoo. Our May, all Tennessee Zoocation, my June Arctic adventure and visits to other terrific zoos have made me derelict in sending out photos from my favorite zoo. Enjoy!

Our all Tennessee Zoocation 2014 was wildly successful. The 70 acre Memphis Zoo was our first stop (after Graceland). The Zoo’s animal inhabitants reside in one-of-a-kind exhibitry, such as Cat Country, Primate Canyon, Animals of the Night, Northwest Passage, Teton Trek and China – home to giant pandas YaYa and Le Le. (And yes, we have now seen all of the giant pandas residing in the US). A special shout out to Sr. Veterinarian, Felicia Knightly, who was so very generous with her time. We loved our visit.

We’ve been wanting to see the two gorilla babies at the Bronx Zoo and we were not disappointed. We also got some other grand surprises with a young Okapi, Wolf’s Guenon baby, Colobus baby, Langur Baby, Brown ruffed lemur baby and the opening day of the Komodo dragon exhibit at Astor Court. A fine visit indeed.

It was fun to introduce a group of seven fabulous ladies to the Staten Island Zoo this week. Once again, General Curator and Vet, Marc Valitutto, was extremely generous with his time and access. A shout out to Marc and all of the fabulous animals at the Staten Island Zoo.
Want to see some beautiful birds up close and personal? Next Sunday, June 1 is our final Breakfast with the Birds photo event of the season at the Central Park Zoo. For details and tickets, go to the website here.

A quick trip to DC to visit recently transplanted friends would not be complete without seeing the National Zoo’s eight month old black and white panda, Bao Bao. Our timing was perfect. We got to spend quality morning time with Bao Bao before she climbed up into a tree for a long nap. I am a sucker for baby animals and there is something even more special about a baby panda.

My mother, Lillian Wolfe, is long gone, but her advice, warnings and general ‘Lili-isms’ live on in our daily life. She taught us to laugh at life, to think, to question authority, to march, to protest and generally act upon what we thought was wrong. She also gave us our moral compass – one glance from Lillian told us instantly whether our behavior was acceptable or not – and I got a lot of glances. My sister Terry and I remember many childhood events differently but we both agree that our mother was a pistol. Here’s to Lillian Wolfe and all of the other mothers, caregivers, nurturers, pamperers, surrogates and loving coddlers out there. You make it all work. And a huge salute to all of the Zoo mothers in today’s photo montage.
Next Sunday, May 18th, we will be having a Photo Workshop called ‘Urban Birds of Prey’ at the Central Park Zoo from 8:30 to 10:30. There are still places available for this fun class. Hope to see you then.

It’s been about six months since I last visited the Bronx Zoo. It is a big zoo with lots of wonderful things to see. Comfortable walking shoes are a must.
