Mongoose pupIt has been almost four months since I shared photos from my home base, the Central Park Zoo. Our May, all Tennessee Zoocation, my June Arctic adventure and visits to other terrific zoos have made me derelict in sending out photos from my favorite zoo. Enjoy!CPZ7.2014

SVALBARD ICEMy Arctic adventure ends with Part Three – the landscape.  Yes I was thrilled to see polar bears, walrus’, seals, reindeer and more but I was most captivated by the compelling landscape of ice, snow and water.  The blues, blacks, turquoises and grays of the landscape kept me staring for hours as we sailed through this cold and beautiful land.  I hope you have enjoyed the journey through my photos and if you are overwhelmed by the summer’s heat – that these photos have cooled you down a bit.SVALBARDLANDSCAPE

SVALBARD BEARI just returned from an amazing adventure to Svalbard, Norway with National Geographic/Linblad to visit the land of the midnight sun – the Arctic. The grand prize was seeing polar bears in the wild but the Arctic has so much else for adventurers including walrus’, seals, Arctic foxes, whales (Beluga, Humpback and Fin) and reindeer.  The richness of it’s bird life kept us busy scanning the skies and the waters.  We reached the 80th parallel north and were about 600 miles from the North Pole. Part two will feature more mammals, birds and the beauty of the landscape. A special shout out to a great crew and expedition naturalists. For those interested in maps, I have included a map of Svalbard below today’s montage.SVALBARDICEBEARSLand_Of_The_Ice_Bears_An_In-Depth_Exploration_Of_Arctic_Svalbard

WENDY-CHATTANOOGA ZOOOur third zoo on our all Tennessee Zoocation was the delightful Chattanooga Zoo.  Acreage-wise it was the smallest on our trip but the most memorable.  They have a terrific collection of animals with wonderful sight lines for both casual visitors and photographers.  A huge shout out to Director Darde Long and education specialist and great guide,  James Brantley for their hospitality, spirit and generosity of time.CHATTANOOGAZOO

IBIS TAKES FLIGHTAfter weeks of snow and ice I decided to spend a little quality time in the Central Park Zoo’s Tropic Zone. It was just what the doctor ordered. It is warm, colorful, and filled with wonderful sounds and calls. If you like today’s montage how about signing up for my next Central Park Zoo Photography Workshop on Sunday, March 9, from 8:30 to 10:30.  Experience breakfast and a photo shoot with our Tropical Birds and maybe we will be lucky and there will still be some opportunities for snow photos too. OKAPI BUTTIt has been a great year for new faces, places and spaces.  Thank you for coming along for the ride. I celebrate the end of my 10th year of Sunday montages, and following tradition I leave you with with no ‘ifs,’ – just ends and butts.  I am also taking a look back at some of the new places that we have visited. Looking forward to more zoo-cations in 2014 and wishing you all a very Happy Zoo Year!

Reflections on a Winter Day – Madison Square Park December 21, 2013

MadisonSquareParkMadison Square Park is the park where Benny, my dog, and I spend lots of time.  Benny’s time is spent sniffing and dreaming of catching that elusive squirrel and I daydream, reflect, chat with neighbors, other dog walkers, and strangers. Beginning in 1912, Madison Square Park was home to the first public holiday tree in the nation. Madison Square Park was home to the torch of the Statue of Liberty for six years to raise funds for the completion of the statue and its pedestal.  There is also a suggestion that the southwest corner of Madison Square Park is where America’s pastime, baseball, got its mid-19th century start.game.. Whatever the history – enjoy today’s reflections.

AskaiWe did not get much snow earlier this week but we got enough for some fun snow photos of the zoo residents (especially the snow leopard twins) enjoying their first snow of the season.  My own kittens, Audrey and Roberta, enjoyed watching their first snowfall too.  Check out the video below today’s photo montage.
