An abbreviated visit to the Bronx Zoo this week found wonderful treasures wherever we went. Seeing old friends during the visit made it even more special. We did not get to see everything but we will return soon.

Happy Mother’s Day to all of the mothers, caregivers, nurturers, pamperers, surrogates and loving coddlers out there. My mother, Lillian Wolfe, is long gone, but her advice, warnings and general ‘Lili-isms’ live on in our daily lives. She taught us to laugh at life, to think, to question authority, to march, to protest – to fight the good fight. She also gave us our moral compass – one glance from Lillian told us instantly whether our behavior was acceptable or not – and I got a lot of glances. My sister Terry and I remember many childhood events differently but we both agree that our mother was a pistol. Here’s to Lillian Wolfe – she formed and informed what we are today.

We took a quick trip to Washington, DC and visited the Smithsonian’s National Zoo. We spent lots of time admiring their newest arrival, two week old western lowland gorilla baby, Moke and his mother, Calaya. We were also charmed by their orangutan toddler, Redd, the giant pandas, clouded leopard, small clawed otters and of course, their new male elephant, Spike. Go visit – it is free (thanks to your taxes).

Had another chance to spend the day working at the Prospect Park Zoo this week. The zoo looks beautiful and the collection animals active. I probably spent too much time watching the baby red panda Ban Li and and his mom, Willow. Go visit if you can.

Our recent visit to New Mexico included a visit to the wonderful 64 acre Albuquerque Zoo. A shout out to Karen and Keith for making our visit so very special. The zoo is beautiful and filled with a varied collection of amazing animals. They are in the midst of building a new penguin habitat that promises to be terrific. I will be back to see that when it is open next year.

I love cats – both big and small. This week’s montage is dedicated to these gorgeous creatures. See if you can identify 14 out of the 37 cat species in the world.

We visited the Bronx Zoo about a month ago and were delighted to find so many babies. Included in these wonderful baby sightings were adorable bison, porcupine, tawny frogmouth, Inca tern, gaur, four Pere David fawns, baboon, ring-tailed lemur and the always charming young gorillas. It was a terrific visit. Go visit while they are still young and active.

It was a beautiful day with a sensational host. EVP Paul Grayson could not have been more hospitable, entertaining and gracious when we visited the Indianapolis Zoo on our Mini-Zoocation in early May. It is a big zoo with something for everyone. Meeting walrus’, rhinos, orangutans and dolphins up-close and personal were unforgettable experiences. Seeing their scarlet macaws free fly overhead throughout the day was also amazing. Thanks to Paul and an outstanding crew for this visit.
