Our last mini-zoocation stop was the Stone Zoo in Stoneham MA. Lots of improvements to this 26 acre facility since we were there last year. A new entrance, several new exhibit animals, two amorous jaguars and of course twin snow leopard cubs made for an ideal visit. We will be back next year for sure.

The penultimate stop on our fall mini-zoocation is an annual favorite – the Southwick’s Zoo in Mendon MA. Southwick’s is always fun and I encourage you to visit. They are closed for the season now (except for several weekends). You can check out their website for dates. My zoocation sidekick and good friend Mary Schwalm has created another desktop calendar for 2019. I have already ordered mine and got them in the mail the other day. Check them out here. A perfect stocking stuffer.

Post zoocation 2018 we took a short trip south to Washington DC. So much to see and do in that town but we always make time to visit the National Zoo. Enjoy!

The eighth and final stop on our Kansas, Oklahoma, Texas zoocation was the Fossil Rim Wildlife Center in Glen Rose Texas. A big shout out to Executive Director Kelley Snodgrass for welcoming us and giving us a thorough tour through this vast wildlife center. He regaled us with stories and history which made our visit that much more enjoyable. The center has 1800 acres with over 1100 animals. They are using the facility to breed and rehabilitate certain species, have a hugely successful cheetah breeding program and are involved in preserving the endangered Atwater chicken. We were fortunate to see their very young rhino up close and personal.

Zoo #7 on our Kansas, Oklahoma, Texas zoocation was the enormous (119 acres) Oklahoma City Zoo and Botanical Garden. It has about 1900 animals in captivating habitats. There was a lot of walking and gawking and we enjoyed ourselves a great deal. Also was introduced to an animal I had never seen before – a tayra (fifth row down on my photo montage). If you are near Oklahoma City I encourage you to visit.

Zoo #5 on our Kansas, Oklahoma, Texas zoocation was the terrific and beautiful Sedgwick County Zoo in Wichita, Kansas. It is definitely now in my top 10 zoos. It has pretty much everything a zoo lover could ask for. It is a lovely locale to meander, the sight lines were amazing and the collection is diverse and ample. A big shout out to Ecotherm Curator, Nate Nelson who treated us to a 90 minute introduction, via golf cart, to this expansive zoo. He was generous with his time, informative and added to the sweet memory of our visit. Our time there was enhanced by a baby orangutan, swimming tiger and most surprising of all, swimming, bathing elephants. Oh yes, and tickling a hippo under the chin was pretty special too. If you find yourself anywhere near Wichita, you really should stop by.

Zoo #3 on our Kansas, Oklahoma, Texas zoocation was the scenic and walker friendly, Rolling Hills Zoo in Salina, Kansas. What started out as a 64,000 square foot indoor natural history museum eventually also expanded into a zoo. Executive director, Bob Jenkins was our host and guide. He deftly explained the history of the museum and zoo and generously shared of his time. If you find yourself traveling through these lush, green parts of Kansas I encourage a visit. Thanks again to Bob Jenkins. My first of three photography opportunities at the Central Park Zoo is in five weeks. To see all three photo op workshops, click here.
