It was a dreary, rainy, cold late fall afternoon when we went to Rhode Island’s Roger Williams Park Zoo. We were perhaps the only two visitors that weekday, but sometimes wonderful surprises happen when you least expect them. We were treated to observing both the giant and lesser (tamandua) anteaters. The giant anteater had a baby on her back (a photo first for both of us). The zookeepers we met were delightful and open to sharing stories and photo ops for us. It was a terrific visit and I encourage you to stop in if you are going through Providence.

Our penultimate stop on 2019 Zoocation was the always terrific Oakland Zoo. I have been visiting this facility for the past 20 years when my niece moved to the west coast. It has grown and only gotten more enjoyable with each visit. A big shout out to Chantal for arranging our visit and to docent Guy for a fun filled tour of the California trail. We spent a lot of time watching their bears play in the water and also spotting their litter of wolf pups. The views are amazing from the top of the facility. If you are on the west coast I encourage you to visit.

Stop #7 on our 2019 Pacific Northwest Zoocation was Wildlife Safari in Winston, Oregon. Truth be told, it was to be a very long travel day and we needed a place to stop, see some animals and perhaps get out of the car. We got a bit of both at this 600 acre AZA facility founded in 1972 by Frank Hart. There are over 500 animals from all over the world with a very successful cheetah breeding program. We were one of only a few cars at the facility so traffic surely was not a concern. The weather continued to be damp and drizzly. We always make the best of our zoo adventures and this was no exception. Next stop – California.

Point Defiance Zoo and Aquarium in Tacoma, WA was stop #3 on our Pacific Northwest 2019 Zoocation. It is a beautiful facility in a spectacular location. We were fortunate to see their eight red wolf cubs (now teenagers) during a keeper talk and feed. Also got to see their adorable tapir baby Kazu. I was especially taken by their puffin habitat and of course seeing their two walrus’ who are on their way to San Diego for breeding was very special. Many of you will recognize the New York Aquarium’s Kulu (featured in my title photo). A special shout out to Malia for spending time with us upon our arrival.

It has been three years since I ventured out to the Queens Zoo. My goal was to see the eight month old Andean (aka Spectacled) bear cubs Brienne and Benny. The female and male cubs were born in January to mother Nicole and father Bouba. My ultra long wait for the cubs to appear was worth the wait. They are pure joy and adorable. I encourage a visit before they grow up. Might I suggest you also visit the Queens Museum (a stone’s throw away from the zoo) and see their amazing NYC panorama. While I have your attention I wanted to give you a heads up about our Central Park Zoo Fall Photo Experience. It is ‘live’ on the WCS website now. The session which will feature pumpkins and is called Zoo Views: Animals in Autumn: Sun, Oct 27, 2019 8:30AM – 10:30AM. It is my favorite photo class and time of the year. Hope to see you in the fall.

I hadn’t been to the Bronx Zoo in about a year and decided to head a bit north for a visit. This large zoo never disappoints. It is difficult to visit every habitat (but I sure did try). I missed a few key areas but will return soon.

The heat was surely on these last couple of weeks in NYC. It seemed to be a good idea to spend some of my time chilling with the penguins at the Central Park Zoo. Our zoo has four species of penguin – King, Gentoo, Macaroni and Chinstrap. The exhibit is chilly and fun. Come visit and stay cool with our fine feathered friends. Also wanted to give you a heads up about our Central Park Zoo Fall Photo Experience. It is ‘live’ on the WCS website now. Last months visit to see old friends at the Toledo Zoo was simply terrific. The zoo grows bigger and better with each of my visits and this time I was lucky enough to see the newly opened Promedica Museum of Natural History too. I do not have photos of the new museum in this week’s montage but trust me, it was fabulous. There is so much to see and explore in this expanding zoo/museum/aquarium it is a full day’s visit. I have visited my friends eight times since they relocated to Toledo and each journey is special. I’ll be back for sure.
