It has been a great year for new faces, places and spaces. Thank you for coming along for the ride. I celebrate the end of my 11th year of Sunday montages, and following tradition I leave you with with no ‘ifs,’ – just ends and butts. I am also taking a look back at some of the new places that we have visited. Looking forward to more zoo-cations in 2015 and wishing you all a very Happy Zoo Year!

‘Tis the season for gift giving and one of the great things about zoos is that gifts are in abundance and they keep on giving all year long. Today’s montage is devoted to some of the 2014 gifts at the Central Park Zoo. Included are two adorable, recently arrived, juvenile harbor seals, two sunbittens, a Victorian crowned-pigeon, leaf-tailed geckos, red-crested turaco chicks, Papaya the sheep, a white-naped crane chick, poison dart frogs, oodles of endangered duckings and of course, Malala, the snow leopard cub. Stay tuned to meet Betty and Veronica, two grizzly bears who will be making their debut soon. Come visit the zoo and give yourself a gift.

Zoo photography is both challenging and fun. They say the eyes are the window to the soul – I don’t know about that – but I do know if you can capture a gorgeous creature looking back at you – it is a great photo moment. A special connection is made between the subject and the viewer. Today’s montage is devoted to those moments.
Are you getting a new camera, lens or phone for Christmas, Hanukkah (or whatever you celebrate)? Why not try it out at my next Wildlife Photo Workshop at the Central Park Zoo on Sunday, January 25th from 8:30 to 10:30. Perhaps we will get lucky and have snowy photo ops but I can surely guarantee you will see some new residents at the zoo and have fun all before the zoo opens to the public. Click here, scroll to Adult Programs and sign up.
My zoocation buddy and good friend Mary Schwalm is again offering her amazing 2015 desk calendars. The images are from this year’s zoocations. The calendar makes a great gift for office an swap, holiday party, stocking stuffer, and a unique gift to enjoy throughout the year. Just $10 – for details click here.

The occasional Friday road trip gang piled into a car this week and visited the Philadelphia Zoo. Their four little lion cubs were the big draw for me and the Philadelphia Zoo never disappoints. Their tree-top trail theme has expanded to include larger primates and now the big cats also have access to this great enrichment. There is nothing quite as thrilling looking up to see a gorgeous tiger overhead, licking his chops. They are in the process of building an overhead trail for the gorillas too. We will be back.

Last month’s min-zoocation in New England finished up at the always fun Stone Zoo in Stoneham MA where we got to see adorable Lynx cubs, two Colobus babies and a gorgeous new wolf troop.
There are still a few spaces left in next Saturday’s photo workshop (November 8th, from 8:30 to 10:30) at the Central Park Zoo. We won’t be having a pumpkin fest but we will be doing other fun things. Sign up here and enjoy lots of photo ops – all before the zoo opens.

My yearly autumn pilgrimage to visit with good friends in New England is never complete without a visit to the always enjoyable and growing, Southwick’s Zoo. Fall is the most beautiful time of year to visit. The zoo closes for the season at the end of October and reopens in the spring. We will be back.

What do zoo fans do in their free time? We visit other zoos, of course. While visiting the fabulous Toledo Zoo last week, we took a ride to the Fort Wayne Children’s Zoo in nearby Indiana. It has been on my ‘to do’ list for a long time and I was not disappointed. The zoo’s history is interesting and their exhibit animals are varied and unique. The zoo is open just six months a year and is loyally supported by it’s citizenry.
Next Sunday (October 19th) is our Central Park Zoo fall foliage photography workshop featuring enrichment pumpkins and fun for all. There are still a few places available – guaranteed fun.
Also – on Saturday, November 8th from 8:30 to 10:30, we are running another photography opportunity. Come one, come all. Check out all of the details (workshop includes breakfast and a chance to speak with our hard working keepers at their exhibits).

Last weekend’s whirlwind visit with old friends at the Toledo Zoo was nothing but fun. So much to see and photograph there will be two, count ’em, two – photo montages dedicated to this great zoo during the week.
For all of you wildlife photographers out there, we are running two WILDLIFE PHOTOGRAPHY workshops at the Central Park Zoo this fall. Along with the fast filling up workshop being held on Sunday, October 19th (Pumpkintastic) there is another opportunity on Saturday, November 8th from 8:30 to 10:30. Check out all of the details (workshop includes breakfast and a chance to speak with our hard working keepers at their exhibits) for both workshops here (scroll down to Adult Programs) – I promise we will have fun – all before the zoo opens to the public.
