Perhaps we humans all gain a bit of weight in the winter. Today’s montage salutes animals who make healthy food choices all year round.

As some of you know, Brooklyn’s Prospect Park Zoo was my childhood zoo and every time I return I get a flashback or two. This week’s visit was no different. I encourage a winter visit. Several new and exciting things to see including the fabulous Pallas Cats and Black-footed cats.

It has been about three months of Sundays since I last posted a ‘while at the zoo’ about my home base, the Central Park Zoo. If you haven’t been to our zoo in a while the winter is a great time to visit. The crowds are smaller, the tropic aviary is nice and warm and the temperate animals much more active. You can combine your next visit with our upcoming photo workshop. It is called Valentine Tails and will be from 8:30 to 10:30 on February 10, 2019 (think hearts.) The workshop is filling up fast. Our last mini-zoocation stop was the Stone Zoo in Stoneham MA. Lots of improvements to this 26 acre facility since we were there last year. A new entrance, several new exhibit animals, two amorous jaguars and of course twin snow leopard cubs made for an ideal visit. We will be back next year for sure.

The penultimate stop on our fall mini-zoocation is an annual favorite – the Southwick’s Zoo in Mendon MA. Southwick’s is always fun and I encourage you to visit. They are closed for the season now (except for several weekends). You can check out their website for dates. My zoocation sidekick and good friend Mary Schwalm has created another desktop calendar for 2019. I have already ordered mine and got them in the mail the other day. Check them out here. A perfect stocking stuffer.

I admit it. One of my favorite days of the year at the Central Park Zoo is Pumpkin Sunday. ‘You get a pumpkin and you get a pumpkin and…’ Our photo workshop last Sunday was a big hit with some very happy photographers, enriched animals, delighted zookeepers and zoo visitors. This was the first in a series of three photography workshops. The next one features hearts, valentines and lots of love. You can sign up here if interested.
