The zoo of my childhood is always fun to visit. Seeing snow amidst the animal collection makes for some pretty photo ops too. Go visit!

We took a mid-week trip to DC and due to a teeny weeny snowfall the city was shut down for an entire day. So we visited the following day and even though there was very little snowfall the visit was well worth our time. Who doesn’t love a giant panda in the snow?

Last Sunday’s Valentine Tails photo class was a big hit. Everyone had a good time, great photos were taken and most of all, the animals at the Central Park Zoo got terrific heart themed enrichment created by an amazing zoo keeper staff (special shout out to Nora and Tumeca). Despite the cold weather there were smiles all around. Enjoy today’s heartfelt photos and hopefully you will sign up for the last photo class of the season. It is going to be held on Sunday, May 19 from 8:30 to 10:30. It is already half filled. Click here for more info.

Taking zoo photos on a bright sunny day can be a challenge. I prefer taking photos on overcast days. Sometimes however, the deep shadows and stark contrasts create an interesting image. Enjoy today’s Me and My Shadow.

February 5th marks the Year of the Pig. Enjoy some of the beautiful pigs I have seen over the years. If you are not celebrating your zodiac animal, here are four other years we have shared. Year of the Snake, Year of the Monkey (that’s me), Year of the Rooster and Year of the Dog.

Perhaps we humans all gain a bit of weight in the winter. Today’s montage salutes animals who make healthy food choices all year round.

Our mini-zoocation in late October continued with a visit to the Capron Park Zoo in Attleboro MA. The Capron Park Zoo was established in 1937 on land donated by the Capron family. The zoo is situated on eight acres and has been open since 1937. We had not been to the Capron Park Zoo in about 10 years and were happy to see that some of the animals we remembered were still there. If you are in the area I suggest a visit.

I admit it. One of my favorite days of the year at the Central Park Zoo is Pumpkin Sunday. ‘You get a pumpkin and you get a pumpkin and…’ Our photo workshop last Sunday was a big hit with some very happy photographers, enriched animals, delighted zookeepers and zoo visitors. This was the first in a series of three photography workshops. The next one features hearts, valentines and lots of love. You can sign up here if interested.

Zoo #4 on our Kansas, Oklahoma, Texas zoocation, the David Traylor Zoo was not on our original itinerary but what’s wrong with a three hour diversion to hit another zoo in Kansas? We went for it and were pleasantly surprised by what we found. The David Traylor Zoo is the smallest AZA accredited zoo in the nation and it is free. The zoo has nearly 400 specimens of birds, mammals and reptiles representing more than 80 species all exhibited in beautiful, natural habitats. The zoo also features exceptional botanical displays. Was it worth the three hour detour? You bet.

Zoo #3 on our Kansas, Oklahoma, Texas zoocation was the scenic and walker friendly, Rolling Hills Zoo in Salina, Kansas. What started out as a 64,000 square foot indoor natural history museum eventually also expanded into a zoo. Executive director, Bob Jenkins was our host and guide. He deftly explained the history of the museum and zoo and generously shared of his time. If you find yourself traveling through these lush, green parts of Kansas I encourage a visit. Thanks again to Bob Jenkins. My first of three photography opportunities at the Central Park Zoo is in five weeks. To see all three photo op workshops, click here.
