For the fourth time in so many years I traveled to Jackson, New Jersey with friends to experience the fun of the Six Flags Wild Safari adventure. The first time I visited Six Flags we drove our own car and had a blast.  Since that time I have dipped into the Lobo piggy bank to experience their VIP private ‘off road’ adventure.  I have loved it each time.  Sorry to say they are renovating their entire park for the 2013 season.  I am sure it will be fun – but I will cherish all of the good times we had in our private tours these past years. If you want to see what they are up to in the coming year, click on this link and watch the video.

Check out the woman’s expression in the first photo of today’s montage.  I imagine she is thinking how she will explain this event to her insurance agent.  If you are wondering – it all ended fine and she (and we) shared a hearty laugh over the entire rhino traffic jam situation.

Recent news that the Bronx Zoo had three tiger cubs sent me traveling north to the Bronx yesterday. Who doesn’t love tiger cubs?  It was well worth the trip. The cubs are adorable.  Other delightful surprises included rock hyrax babies, a whole bunch of dwarf mongoose babies, a young sifaka and brown ruffed lemur and an adorable young sea lion pup.  All in all – a fine Saturday visit.

Don’t forget my Central Park Zoo Fall Photography workshop class has been moved to Sunday, November 11th from 9:00AM-11:00AM. The original date (Sunday, November 4th) conflicted with the NYC Marathon. This class fills up quickly. Click on this Central Park Zoo link,  read all about the workshop and sign up for some guaranteed photo fun. There are programs and classes for all ages.  Check them all out and plan for a fun fall and winter zoo experience.

On my recent mini-zoocation to visit good friends in New England we went to York’s Wild Kingdom in York Beach, Maine. The zoo is part of a larger amusement area in a lovely spot in Maine.  It is open seasonally and if you are passing through the area I suggest a stop over.  I especially found their prairie dog habitat quite a lot of fun.

A correction is in order:  Last week I told you about my Central Park Zoo Fall Photography workshopThe date has been moved to Sunday, November 11th from 9:00AM-11:00AM. The original date (Sunday, November 4th) conflicted with the NYC Marathon. This class fills up quickly. While visiting good friends in New England two weeks ago we opted for a sensational private whale watch off the coast of Gloucester, Massachusetts.  It was a joyous adventure with the sighting of over 15 whales including some mothers and calves. When Captain Nick turned off the boat’s engine we could  hear the whales breathing.  Very exciting indeed.  If you subscribe to my weekly photos (and get them in your in-box) you are probably not able to view my videos from your inbox image.  Just scroll up and click on the Blue link (which is the name of today’s send) and it will take you back to my ‘While at the Zoo’ website where you can watch today’s video selection – beautiful whales.

It is getting to be that time of year when fall will soon bring some amazing colors.  I will be leading a Fall Photography workshop, once again at the Central Park Zoo on Sunday, Nov 4, 2012 from 9:00AM-11:00AM.  This class fills up quickly. Click on this Central Park Zoo link and sign up for some guaranteed photo fun before the zoo opens to the public.

An annual rite of summer’s passage includes a visit to good friends in Massachusetts and a return visit to the Southwick’s Zoo in Mendon, MA.  I call it our mini-zoocation. Southwick’s always has something new.  This visit included two adorable five month old playful warthogs, a young Ankole calf (aka Watusi), baby pot-bellied pigs and much more. If you subscribe to my weekly photos (and get them in your in-box) you are probably not able to view my videos from your inbox image.  Just scroll up and click on the Blue link (which is the name of today’s send) and it will take you back to my ‘While at the Zoo’ website where you can watch today’s video selection – the baby warthogs playing. Enrichment is a big part of daily life at zoos. Hidden treats are a great way to keep the animals interested, busy and stimulated throughout the day. Summertime gives them even more enrichment as our many Central Park Zoo campers create enrichment for many of the zoo residents.  This photographer is enriched by being able to snap away as the animals enjoy their treats. Check out this video of zoo animals eating that I created back in 2007. The Prospect Park Zoo is the first zoo I ever visited – way, way, way back when I was a child growing up in Brooklyn.  It, thankfully, is not the same zoo that I remember but now a wonderful, ever growing collection of beautiful animals.  Southdown sheep, Fred and Ginger recently has a lamb,. There is a terrific new cow named Tetley, baby dwarf mongoose pups, an active frog collection, fabulous birds and of course, lots of primates.  Don’t forget to visit the walkabout to enjoy seeing the kangaroos, dingoes and very friendly Cape Barren Goose.

It has been about two months since I sent out photos from my home base – the Central Park Zoo.  There’s lots going on, as usual, at the zoo. Our four species of penguins are fattening up for the upcoming molting season. Gus, the polar bear, plays with his toys in the cool refreshing pool. The three coati brothers (Lobo, Zev and Wolfie) continue to be playful and active most of the day.  Our fabulous sea ducks cool themselves off in the sprinklers and ponds.  Come visit soon and meet our two new sensational Hyacinth Macaws, located directly outside the Penguin House. Other animals featured today are the red crested turaco, Rahjah sehlduck, Jambu fruit dove, April the sea lion, a muntjac, Atlantic puffin, crested coua, red panda and snow monkey.

The Queens Zoo has a beautiful two month old Texas Longhorn calf living on the farm.  The male calf, born on May 26th weighed 60 pounds at birth.  The zoo also has an active Canadian Lynx, very busy thick-billed parrot habitat, an exciting aviary, bison, pronghorns, coyotes, pumas and more.
