The Cameron Park Zoo in Waco, Texas was the third stop on our Texas Zoocation. Occasionally we get to meet old animal friends on zoocation. The Cameron Park Zoo brought us a surprise meeting with Kai, their very handsome young male lion (Kai’s photo is in the second row). Kai’s mother, Moxie, was born at the Bronx Zoo in 2009 and then left for Hawaii where she gave birth to Kai in 2012. Check out Moxie’s montage from 2009 .

The zoo had all of the big animals one could want to see plus lot of smaller fun habitats. A special shout out to Manda Butler for her generosity of time and special fun activities for us. CAMERONPARKZOO

My usual Sunday photo montages were interrupted by some health stuff – but I am am back and am happy to continue sharing photos from our recent Texas zoocation. The Caldwell Zoo  in Tyler Texas was the second stop on ZooCation 2015. I thought this zoo was near perfect.  It had a terrific layout, great big collection of animals, and amazing sight lines (especially the views through the savannah). We were fortunate to be at the zoo on one of their enrichment days. We could hardly keep up with all of the wonderful enrichment treats that were given to the animals.  The staff was warm and friendly and made our visit very special.  Huge and lous shout outs to Scotty, Joanna and Amanda for enriching our visit. Dallas-MJ-MeZoocation 2015 began with our east coast 5AM flights to Dallas – first stop the Dallas Zoo. We arrived just in time to join the media frenzy for the debut of little Kipenzi the Giraffe. We met some wonderful warm people and got to see a few special things including an up-close visit with their cheetah and companion dog.  I must admit my favorite thing was seeing MJ the adorable Tamandua who was born at the Staten Island Zoo  living in his new home. He is the darling of their education tractable program. A shout out to Janelle, Harrison and Allison for a super visit.DALLASZOO

Happy Mother’s Day to all of the mothers, caregivers, nurturers, pamperers, surrogates and loving coddlers out there. Most of today’s photos were taken on last week’s all Texas Zoocation.  We had a blast and I will be posting photos of those great Texas zoos in the coming weeks.

My mother, Lillian Wolfe, is long gone, but her advice, warnings and general ‘Lili-isms’ live on in our daily lives.  She taught us to laugh at life, to think, to question authority, to march, to protest and generally act upon what we thought was wrong. She also gave  us our moral compass – one glance from Lillian told us instantly whether our behavior was acceptable or not – and I got a lot of glances.  My sister Terry and I remember many childhood events differently but we both agree that our mother was a  pistol. Here’s to Lillian Wolfe – she formed and informed what we are today.MD2015

Grizzly BearYes, it is still chilly in NYC but spring has definitely sprung with magnolias, forsythia, blue bells, hellebores, budding crab apples, cherry blossoms and more.  The Central Park Zoo sheep have been sheared, the school groups enjoy the zoo on their outings and in general – it is good to be alive.

We embark on our Texas 2015 Zoocation next week. Looking forward to six new zoos and an aquarium and hopefully meeting new friends along the way.AHSPRING

naked mole ratA whirlwind visit last weekend to DC to visit good friends, enjoy the cherry blossoms and get a bit of culture would not be complete without a visit to the National Zoo. Our visit was abbreviated –  so we headed straight for mammals.  In just two hours we managed to enjoy their three giant pandas, Mei Xiang, Tian Tian and baby Bao Bao. We rushed to the Amazonia area to see the adorable four month old Andean bear cubs Muniri and Mayni with their mother. We waved ‘hi’ to the elephants, seals and orangutans and luckily got a chance to visit the small mammal house with keeper Maria who generously gave her time to us. We fell in love with their sand cat named Thor, their South American porcupines and an adorable naked mole rat (featured above).  A shout out to my friend Nick, Ashley and Maria for making our short visit most memorable. We will be back.NATIONALZOO2015

BETTY BEARThe Central Park Zoo’s newest residents, grizzly bears Betty and Veronica, have settled in nicely to their new home.  After a long cold winter they have truly begun to enjoy their streams, ponds and pools and can be seen bathing throughout the day. Come visit!BV

BettyAs most of you know, on the first day of spring we got four inches of snow in the Big Apple.  I thought it was a good time to share some of the last snowy day zoo photos for awhile (I hope).LASTGASP

NUKANothing like Coney Island on a frigid winter’s day with a visit to Nathan’s (yum) and Brooklyn’s NY Aquarium.  The Aquarium is still undergoing construction from the devastation of Hurricane Sandy and the promises of new and exciting exhibits will be happening soon(ish). A huge shout out to Kayla, Martha, the keeper staff and the amazing Nuka the walrus for making us feel so very welcome. We will be back.NYAQ2015
