Splish splash they were takin’ a bath! The Central Park Zoo has a fabulous collection of waterfowl. But they are not the only ones that enjoy splish splashing at the zoo. Come visit!
My zoo-cation pal, Mary Schwalm has been in Indianapolis all week working for her newspaper, the Eagle Tribune, in North Andover, MA. She went to the Indianapolis Zoo to see if their residents had an opinion on today’s Super Bowl. She rigged it – but it was fun to watch. Go Giants!

It has been a terrific zoo year filled with new faces and places. And keeping up with tradition, I end the year with no ‘ifs,’ – just ends and butts. The new year will also bring several photo workshops that I will be running out of the Central Park Zoo. You can register for them now.

Winterfest at the Central Park Zoo December 4, 2011

I enjoyed the first evening of Central Park Zoo’s Winterfest this past Friday night. It was fun and beautifully lit with thousands of lights. I hope my photos below reflect the beauty of the event. There are still two Fridays and Saturdays in December to enjoy the zoo until 6:30 p.m. You can stop by in the afternoon or after work for a stroll under thousands of twinkling lights. Visit cold-weather creatures, enjoy crafts and Wildlife Theater, see two wintry 4-D features, and watch the animals enjoy fish-cicles, fruits, and other favorite treats during holiday enrichment sessions. For a break from the chilly air, warm up with birds, lemurs, and tortoises in the Tropic Zone, a steamy 80 degrees all year long. You can also do some holiday shopping at the Zootique and enjoy treats and hot cocoa in the Dancing Crane Cafe.

I had no idea that the nine-spotted ladybug was the insect of New York State until I read the article ‘Ladybug, Ladybug, Welcome Back Home: Good News for the Official State Insect’ – ‘It is not just any bug, but the native nine-spotted ladybug. And its reappearance is something of a relief, because it is the official New York State insect, even though the last recorded sighting of it in New York was 29 years ago’. Read the entire good news article here. Doing a quick search I found that there are many sites dedicated to ladybugs. Who knew? Here is a good site and was mentioned in the New York Times article. . Here are some frequently asked questions about lady bugs.
I took these photos back on Sept 21, 2011 when the horticulturist at the Central Park Zoo released a gazillion ladybugs into the tropical rainforest as eco-friendly aphid control. It was fun to watch and those wonderful, industrious ladybugs work very quickly. Enjoy the photos.

This week we took a ride out to Riverhead, Long Island to visit the Long Island Aquarium and Exhibition Center
(formerly called Atlantis Marine World Aquarium).
It is the home of lots of terrific, well lit, clean tanks filled with beautiful and amazing fish. It is also the home to African Penguins, sea lions, seals, otters and four Japanese Macaques (snow monkeys). The two older male snow monkeys, Pico and Juraco lived at the Central Park Zoo and moved to a special new home which was built for them seven years ago. They were joined this year by two younger snow monkeys, Zeppy and Oz, who also lived at the Central Park Zoo. It was great to see our little guys again. They all are looking great and seem to be enjoying the good life.
Enjoying this very short video of the Flamboyant Cuttlefish that we saw chowing down on some food. Be amazed at the tentacled-like projections that come from its mouth to grab the food.

I shot this video last week while watching our playful Banded Mongoose ravage their pumpkin. Happy Halloween!

Today is my fall photography workshop at the Central Park Zoo. The class is sold out and should be lots of fun — think pumpkins.
There are lots of other fun and interesting classes going on at the zoo through March. For instance, on Saturday, November 5th, our terrific Vet Tech is giving a class on what it is like to take care of all of the animals in the zoo. Check it out and the other classes here.

Last weekend found us traveling south to the always enchanting, Philadelphia Zoo. They have had a delightful baby boom. We only got to see the adorable jaguar cub but that was plenty of cuteness for one trip. We will return soon. Check out my video of Baby girl Batu, born in October of 2009, at three months old. Her mother is called Tua and father is named Sugi.

Fall fun for all at the Central Park Zoo. This week’s photo montage features some of our beautiful mammals. Check out Gus, our polar bear, Amaya, one of our red pandas, a snow leopard, one of our three coatis, a sea lion, snow monkey, cavies and a mound of banded mongooses. Also included is our fast growing Baby Irene Hope, born during Hurricane Irene and Oliver, one of our pot-bellied pigs. Those sensational ducks are rajahs, pink-eared and harlequin. Come visit!
