Essex County’s Turtle Back Zoo is celebrating its 50th anniversary this weekend. We took a short trip out to West Orange to share their joy. I am sure that my Jersey friends have many sweet memories of childhood trips to the zoo. Turtle Back is a growing Zoo with something for everyone. Happy Anniversary to you!

The day before Hurricane Sandy hit New York City we innocently enjoyed some pumpkin enrichment fun with many of the beautiful animals at the Central Park Zoo. Hope these photos make you smile as much as I did while taking the shots. There are still a few spaces left in my Fall Photo Workshop next Sunday, November 11th from 9 to 11 AM. Guaranteed fun. Click here and sign up.
That’s my dog Benny (above) showing off his Halloween costume. Sadly, Halloween was cancelled in the City but Benny got to wear his costume around Casa Lobo and get many treats.

We had a real treat this week. We were invited by my friend, Marc Valitutto, to visit him at the Staten Island Zoo. Marc is their new General Curator and Veterinarian. He gave us a fabulous tour and shared some of the plans that he has for this 75 year old zoo. I look forward to visiting Marc often and watch as his plans come to light. If you look carefully, you will spot the zoo’s famous Staten Island Chuck, who gives Punxsutawney Phil a run for his money each Ground Hog Day. Not only was the zoo lots of fun, but we got to ride the Staten Island ferry and on the return trip and stopped to visit the beautiful 9/11 Memorial that is right near the ferry and well worth your time. There is a photo of this lovely spot on the bottom of today’s montage.

My zoocation pal, Mary Schwalm, drove down to NYC for a very busy local mini-zoocation. One of our journeys took us to the Philadelphia Zoo. We got to see their year old gibbon baby, 10 month old snow leopard cubs, new female lion and fast growing jaguar cub (that we saw last October) as well as a two month old adorable sifaka baby. Enjoy the photos and my video of the breeding Victoria Crowned Pigeons that were seen at the McNeil Avian Center. We are enduring those dog days of August. It is hot, sticky and while at the zoo you can easily see both the residents and the visitors catching a big yawn every now and then. And yes, that is my dog Benny, caught in the act of yawning too. If you want to see these images larger, go here.
