Growing up in Brooklyn, the Prospect Park Zoo was my first zoo and will always have a special place in my heart. I hope you enjoy this week’s visit to Brooklyn where I feature an adorable new male calf, twin Geoffroy Tamarin babies, a red-eyed tree frog, dingo, red panda and much more. Enjoy all of these fabulous faces and a very special Hanukkah greeting to one and all from my house to your house. If you subscribe to my weekly photos (and get them in your in-box) you are probably not able to view my videos directly from your inbox. Just scroll up and click on the Blue link (which is the name of today’s send) and it will take you back to my ‘While at the Zoo’ website where you can watch today’s video selection from Marley the Hanukkah singing dog. Marley is very talented. I have not been able to teach my dog Benny how to sing but he is excellent at striking a pose as soon as I approach him with my camera.

Crisp air, winter coats and the last burst of fall colors blanket the Central Park Zoo. Do not let the chilly weather keep you from visiting us. The Tropic Zone is toasty and the Penguin and Puffin House are climate controlled. Our temperate animals are more active than ever. Come visit!
Here is a wonderful ‘Happy Holidays and Thank You‘ video from the Wildlife Conservation Society. While on zoo business in the area, we visited the spectacular Niagara Falls. Going off season was a great decision. Niagara Falls is the collective name for three waterfalls that straddle the international border between the Canadian province of Ontario and the U.S. state of New York. Here is a link to some of the wackadoodles who have dared to go over the Falls. My favorite story is from 1911 when the infamous Bobby Leach plunged over the Falls in a steel barrel. Bobby broke both kneecaps and his jaw during his daring event. Years later while touring in New Zealand, Bobby slipped on an orange peel and died from complications due to gangrene. There is much to be thankful for this year. I wish you all a happy, healthy and yummy Thanksgiving. Today is filled with food and thanks. Here are some images of some of the fabulous animals that I have seen enjoying food a plenty. I have to get going and try to figure out how to cook that 12 pound turkey that is in my refrigerator before my guests arrive at 4PM. Gobble, gobble.

Central Park Zoo business brought us to the corner of New York State and the beautiful Niagara Falls/Buffalo area this week. A return trip to the Buffalo Zoo to visit old WCS zoo friends who now work at the zoo was lots of fun. A special shout out goes to Shanna and Rob. They were generous with their time and it was greatly appreciated. If you recall the Buffalo Zoo was the eighth and final zoo visited on our last zoocation in June. If you are ever in the area I highly recommend visiting this ever growing zoo.
First Taste of Snow at the Central Park Zoo November 11, 2012

It has been a rough 10 days in the metropolitan area. First Hurricane Sandy and then a nor’easter, called Athena. I know the snow is a hardship to many people but I love the Central Park Zoo’s beautiful animals as they see and taste their first steps on the freshly fallen snow.
My good friend and zoocation buddy, Mary Schwalm has produced a desk calendar for 2013. The calendar fits into a CD sized case and is a free standing display. This popular 2013 animal themed Desk Calendar is available for purchase. It is only $10 plus shipping. You can e-mail her at mary@maryschwalm.com for orders and further details. The photo below shows you the cover and one of the months. They make great holiday gifts and they are going quickly.
The View from Casa Lobo November 3, 2012

It was a very rough week for those who suffered through Hurricane Sandy. I am only now beginning to see the devastation on TV after emerging from four days without power at Casa Lobo. The above photo of Benny and me was taken by our doorman before the more difficult days that were to come. Each day got more difficult and I apologize to those that crossed my path as my mood became darker and edgier – and I lost my sense of humor somewhere along the way. Probably during one of those wretched climbs up 11 flights of stairs with Benny the dog. In Benny’s defense – he was a trooper and Madison the cat just continued to do her thing (as cats do). I took some photos along the way and thought I would share them with you.
Here is a link that depicts some great shots from more daring photographers who roamed the City during this past week. The very popular HighLine suffered as well. Closer to my heart, the he NY Aquarium got hit very hard. Here is a link for photos and if you are inclined to help there are instructions on the NY Aquarium link.
I hope all of you out there are warm dry and safe from harm.

A branch of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, The Cloisters is located in beautiful Fort Tryon Park, overlooking the Hudson River. The museum and gardens are devoted to the art of medieval Europe. I love this place. It is a quick trip on the A train and a lovely walk through the park. On your way to the Cloisters, do not forget to stop and have a fabulous lunch at the New Leaf Cafe. The cafe is a part of Bette Midler’s NYRP which is a non-profit organization dedicated to transforming open space in underserved communities to create a greener, more sustainable New York City. In partnership with the City of New York, NYRP is also leading MillionTreesNYC – an initiative to plant and care for one million new trees throughout New York City’s five boroughs by 2017. All proceeds from the New Leaf Cafe support New York Restoration Project’s mission of turning forgotten spaces into growing places.

Regardless of your opinion about explorer Christopher Columbus, this public art installation at Columbus Circle is interesting and thought provoking. Japanese artist Tatzu Nishi continues his oeuvre of transforming statues, monuments and architectural details. We get an intimate perspective of the statue, fabulous views and a six story walk up for exercise. You have until November 18th to check it out. It is free and worth your time.

While visiting family in California this week we enjoyed an adventure at Safari West in Santa Rosa, CA. This AZA facility located on 400 gorgeous acres is fun for all. We toured in a terrific open vehicle while we oohed and aahed all of the wildlife in very close proximity. I highly recommend this place if you are in the area.
Only three weeks to go until my Central Park Zoo Fall Photography workshop, Sunday, November 11th from 9:00AM-11:00AM. There are a few spaces still available. Click on this Central Park Zoo link, read all about the workshop and sign up for some guaranteed photo fun. There are many programs and classes for all ages. Check them all out and plan for a fun fall and winter zoo experience.
