Happy Mother’s Day to all of the mothers, caregivers, nurturers, pamperers, surrogates and loving coddlers out there. Most of today’s photos were taken on last week’s all Texas Zoocation.  We had a blast and I will be posting photos of those great Texas zoos in the coming weeks.

My mother, Lillian Wolfe, is long gone, but her advice, warnings and general ‘Lili-isms’ live on in our daily lives.  She taught us to laugh at life, to think, to question authority, to march, to protest and generally act upon what we thought was wrong. She also gave  us our moral compass – one glance from Lillian told us instantly whether our behavior was acceptable or not – and I got a lot of glances.  My sister Terry and I remember many childhood events differently but we both agree that our mother was a  pistol. Here’s to Lillian Wolfe – she formed and informed what we are today.MD2015

naked mole ratA whirlwind visit last weekend to DC to visit good friends, enjoy the cherry blossoms and get a bit of culture would not be complete without a visit to the National Zoo. Our visit was abbreviated –  so we headed straight for mammals.  In just two hours we managed to enjoy their three giant pandas, Mei Xiang, Tian Tian and baby Bao Bao. We rushed to the Amazonia area to see the adorable four month old Andean bear cubs Muniri and Mayni with their mother. We waved ‘hi’ to the elephants, seals and orangutans and luckily got a chance to visit the small mammal house with keeper Maria who generously gave her time to us. We fell in love with their sand cat named Thor, their South American porcupines and an adorable naked mole rat (featured above).  A shout out to my friend Nick, Ashley and Maria for making our short visit most memorable. We will be back.NATIONALZOO2015

Malala in snowThere’s nothing quite like watching animals frolic in the snow. Tuesday’s few inches of snow made for some great zoo animal action.  This week’s montage features Central Park Zoo’s debut of grizzly bears, Betty and Veronica and seven month old snow leopard cub, Malala, enjoying her first taste of snow. The snow monkeys and red pandas also enjoyed their first snow of 2015. Come visit.firstsnow2015

Chimp-ButtIt has been a great year for new faces, places and spaces.  Thank you for coming along for the ride. I celebrate the end of my 11th year of Sunday montages, and following tradition I leave you with with no ‘ifs,’ – just ends and butts.  I am also taking a look back at some of the new places that we have visited. Looking forward to more zoo-cations in 2015 and wishing you all a very Happy Zoo Year!

Lion CubsThe occasional Friday road trip gang piled into a car this week and visited the Philadelphia Zoo.  Their four little lion cubs were the big draw for me and the Philadelphia Zoo never disappoints. Their tree-top trail theme has expanded to include larger primates and now the big cats also have access to this great enrichment.  There is nothing quite as thrilling looking up to see a gorgeous tiger overhead, licking his chops.  They are in the process of building an overhead trail for the gorillas too. We will be back. PHILZOO11.2014https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Zq4HjpoHxkk

Stone LynxLast month’s min-zoocation in New England finished up at the always fun Stone Zoo in Stoneham MA where we got to see adorable Lynx cubs, two Colobus babies and a gorgeous new wolf troop.

There are still a few spaces left in next Saturday’s photo workshop (November 8th, from 8:30 to 10:30) at the Central Park Zoo. We won’t be having a pumpkin fest but we will be doing other fun things.  Sign up here and enjoy lots of photo ops – all before the zoo opens.STONEZOO2014

Grivet Monkey -SouthwicksMy yearly autumn pilgrimage to visit with good friends in New England is never complete without a visit to the always enjoyable and growing,  Southwick’s Zoo.  Fall is the most beautiful time of year to visit.  The zoo closes for the season at the end of October and reopens in the spring.  We will be back.SOUTHWICKS2014

CC the SlothWhat a treat to introduce two out of town friends to the fun at the always terrific Staten Island Zoo. We got to meet a new young Ground Hornbill, along with old friends such as CC the sloth, Gregory the Fennec Fox, the fast growing Arctic Fox pups and of course, the popcorn smelling adorable, baby Binturong.  Thanks again to Vet and General Curator, Marc Valitutto for his time and energy.  We loved our visit (and will be back).SIZOO9.2014

MandrillI took a quick trip up to the Bronx Zoo this week and when later, looking at my photos, I realized it was a mammalcentric kinda day.  Lions, tigers and bears (oh my) and baby gorillas, baby colobus monkeys, baby ring-tailed lemurs, baby dwarf mongooses and more. Fun!MAMMALDAY
