A very Happy Mother’s Day to all of the mothers, caregivers, nurturers, pamperers, surrogates and loving coddlers out there. My mother, Lillian Wolfe, is long gone, but her advice, warnings and general ‘Lili-isms’ live on in our daily lives. She taught us to laugh at life, to think, to question authority, to march, to protest – to fight the good fight. She also gave us our moral compass – one glance from Lillian told us instantly whether our behavior was acceptable or not – and I got a lot of glances. My sister Terry and I remember many childhood events differently but we both agree that our mother was a pistol. Here’s to Lillian Wolfe – she formed and informed what we are today.

I had another chance to spend a few days working at the Prospect Park Zoo this past month. The zoo looks beautiful and the collection animals active. Brooklyn’s Prospect Park Zoo was the zoo of my childhood and whenever I visit I get a few fond flashbacks. Go visit if you can.

We headed south for a day trip to the Philadelphia Zoo this week. Other than the enormous crowds (who knew it would be crowded on a Tuesday)? – we had a fun visit. Many additions and upgrades were noted, including the repurposed polar bear exhibit which is now inhabited by penguins. Also we noticed many more bird habitats, tree top trails and food options. The Philadelphia Zoo is always a fun visit.

Last week’s short sojourn to California to see family included a zoo visit of course. This time we chose the Oakland Zoo as it has had a major expansion over the past year. Last summer they opened the California Trail to the public, focusing on this state’s native wildlife. A fun gondola ride takes you to the top of the zoo where you are greeted with a delicious restaurant and great views. Along the trail, you encounter animals such as American black bears, American bison, California condors, eagles, gray wolves, grizzly bears, jaguars and mountain lions. The rest of the zoo is thoroughly enjoyable. If you are anywhere in the area I encourage a visit.

Today is St. Patrick’s Day. It is customary to wear green clothing, shamrocks or an accessory; which is called the “wearing of the green“. Many of our Central Park Zoo animals sport green everyday. Erin go Bragh!

We took a mid-week trip to DC and due to a teeny weeny snowfall the city was shut down for an entire day. So we visited the following day and even though there was very little snowfall the visit was well worth our time. Who doesn’t love a giant panda in the snow?

Last Sunday’s Valentine Tails photo class was a big hit. Everyone had a good time, great photos were taken and most of all, the animals at the Central Park Zoo got terrific heart themed enrichment created by an amazing zoo keeper staff (special shout out to Nora and Tumeca). Despite the cold weather there were smiles all around. Enjoy today’s heartfelt photos and hopefully you will sign up for the last photo class of the season. It is going to be held on Sunday, May 19 from 8:30 to 10:30. It is already half filled. Click here for more info.

Taking zoo photos on a bright sunny day can be a challenge. I prefer taking photos on overcast days. Sometimes however, the deep shadows and stark contrasts create an interesting image. Enjoy today’s Me and My Shadow.

February 5th marks the Year of the Pig. Enjoy some of the beautiful pigs I have seen over the years. If you are not celebrating your zodiac animal, here are four other years we have shared. Year of the Snake, Year of the Monkey (that’s me), Year of the Rooster and Year of the Dog.
