Enrichment is a big part of daily life at zoos. Hidden treats are a great way to keep the animals interested, busy and stimulated throughout the day. Summertime gives them even more enrichment as our many Central Park Zoo campers create enrichment for many of the zoo residents. This photographer is enriched by being able to snap away as the animals enjoy their treats. Check out this video of zoo animals eating that I created back in 2007. It has been about two months since I sent out photos from my home base – the Central Park Zoo. There’s lots going on, as usual, at the zoo. Our four species of penguins are fattening up for the upcoming molting season. Gus, the polar bear, plays with his toys in the cool refreshing pool. The three coati brothers (Lobo, Zev and Wolfie) continue to be playful and active most of the day. Our fabulous sea ducks cool themselves off in the sprinklers and ponds. Come visit soon and meet our two new sensational Hyacinth Macaws, located directly outside the Penguin House. Other animals featured today are the red crested turaco, Rahjah sehlduck, Jambu fruit dove, April the sea lion, a muntjac, Atlantic puffin, crested coua, red panda and snow monkey.

Zoo # 7 on our zoocation was the enormous and beautiful Toronto Zoo. We were fortunate to meet some new Zoo friends who were very generous with their time and attention with some behind the scenes access. The Toronto Zoo has an adorable young polar bear named Hudson and three beautiful white lion cubs just in from South Africa. I made a short video of the adorable lion cubs that you can see below. Enjoy! If you subscribe to my weekly photos (and get them in your in-box) you are probably not able to view my videos from your inbox image. Zoo #6 on our zoocation was an unplanned visit. Since we had the time and energy we crossed the Canadian/US border for the first of four times on our way to the Safari Niagara Zoo in Stevensville, Ontario. It was hot and there was way too much cyclone fencing but it was a fun visit with an active hippo. My zoo buddy adores hippos.

While in New England to attend a dear friend’s wedding this weekend, in addition to the festivities, we, of course, had to make time to go to the Franklin Park Zoo to see their sweet 18 month old baby gorilla and meet their adorable 18 day old baby ring-tailed lemur. Nebuchadrezzer, gave birth on March 19 inside Franklin Park Zoo’s Tropical Forest. Franklin Park Zoo has eight lemurs, including the new baby. My zoocation pal, Mary Schwalm, drove down to NYC for a very busy local mini-zoocation. One of our journeys took us to the Philadelphia Zoo. We got to see their year old gibbon baby, 10 month old snow leopard cubs, new female lion and fast growing jaguar cub (that we saw last October) as well as a two month old adorable sifaka baby. Enjoy the photos and my video of the breeding Victoria Crowned Pigeons that were seen at the McNeil Avian Center. Spring at the Central Park Zoo is terrific. Come visit us and meet our four new Rockhopper Penguins, who join the other three species, the Gentoo, Chinstrap and King penguins. We also have an adorable baby lamb and a beautiful new goat. Our large waterfowl collection all look beautiful and are fun to watch as they display to one another. There’s also lots of nest building to watch in the Tropical Aviary.
If you like my photos and enjoy taking pictures yourself, why not come to the zoo for one of my photo workshops this spring? There are still a few spots left in each workshop. The three workshops are highlighted below. You can read all about them and sign up on line here.
– On April14th (8:30 to 11:30) we are repeating our popular Breakfast With the Birds adult class where you will have the chance to hear all about our amazing collection and then are able to photograph the birds during morning census. The class finishes up at the Apple store for a fabulous editing tutorial from the techies at Apple.
– We also have a family program scheduled for Earth Day (Sunday, April 22nd from 10:00 to 11:30) and is geared to adults and kids (ages 6 to 18). Share the joy of wildlife and photography with the family. It will be fun and you can take the memories home through your photos.
– And finally, a new workshop called Urban Birds of Prey on Sunday May 20th (9:00 to 11:00) where you will meet some of our raptor ambassadors up-close and personal. This will afford you great opportunities to photograph and learn about these beautiful birds. Looking forward to seeing some of you soon at the Zoo.
